The activities of the Haritha Keralam Mission in schools have been intensified, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Water quality testing laboratories have been established in 234 schools, and green islets have been created in 457 schools. The Mission also supports adherence to green protocols and biodiversity and environmental awareness programs. Under the leadership of the Haritha Keralam Mission, local water quality testing labs are being set up adjacent to chemistry labs in one higher secondary school in each local self-government institution in the state. Currently, 234 such labs are operational, and the establishment of 294 more labs is in progress. The Chief Minister disclosed this in response to questions in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Additionally, the Haritha Keralam Mission has been intervening in schools to ensure waste management, water conservation, and environmental protection activities as part of adhering to green protocols, with 4198 schools being declared as green schools. Green isletas have been established in 67.69 acres across 457 schools. Furthermore, to provide knowledge about the biodiversity of the region to visiting students, a ‘Neelakurinji’ Biodiversity Knowledge Centre has been established at the Adimali Government High School in Munnar.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that clear guidelines have been issued for adherence to green protocols in educational institutions. As part of an extensive campaign to implement green protocols in all institutions in the state, inspections were conducted in 14096 institutions, and 9210 institutions qualified for the green certificate.

The Haritha Keralam Mission has also been implementing activities to enable students to participate in biodiversity conservation and water and energy conservation efforts. As part of the Net Zero Carbon Kerala Through People campaign, biodiversity and energy conservation interventions are being carried out in schools in 92 local self-government institutions. As part of this initiative, energy conservation equipment has been distributed to 2395 Anganwadis under the 'Angan Jyoti' project.

In connection with World Environment Day celebrations 2024, the Haritha Keralam Mission has supported various environmental awareness programs in schools. As part of organizing environmental camps and study festivals every summer, a study festival camp was held on May 26, 27, and 28, 2024, with the participation of students selected through block, district, and state-level quiz competitions. From this, 59 students were selected as state-level school green ambassadors, the Chief Minister added.
