The Haritha Keralam Mission, in collaboration with Local Self-Government Institutions and various government departments, is launching a statewide mass action program titled Water is Life. The initiative aims to ensure the availability of safe drinking water and to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases.
The program will be implemented in phases:
Well Chlorination (August 30–31, 2025):
For the first time, all wells in the state will be scientifically chlorinated to eliminate microorganisms responsible for fatal diseases such as amoebic encephalitis. Public wells will also be covered under this activity. Residents using piped water are advised to clean their storage tanks as well. Chlorination will be carried out based on water volume, with bleaching powder made available through Local Self-Government Institutions. Medical officers and health inspectors will provide technical guidance.
Awareness and Water Quality Testing (September 8–30, 2025):
Under the leadership of the General Education Department, awareness campaigns will be conducted in schools. In addition, extensive water quality testing will be undertaken through a network of chemistry laboratories in higher secondary schools established in collaboration with Haritha Keralam Mission. Corrective measures will be carried out based on test results.
Public Water Source Purification (September 20–November 1, 2025):
Comprehensive cleaning of ponds, wells, and other public water sources will be organized. Measures will also be taken to block waste inflow channels and create awareness among local communities on maintaining water purity.
The action plan is being implemented with the active participation of the Health Department, Local Self-Government Department, and Local Self-Government Institutions. The Jalmanu Jeevan Campaign will serve as the backbone of this initiative, mobilizing ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Kudumbashree members, Haritha Karma Sena, MGNREGS workers, volunteers, and community-based organizations.
A detailed record of all chlorination and related activities will be compiled in early September to ensure effective monitoring and evaluation.
