Sessions on Day Two of Haritha Keralam National Environment Seminar

The second day of the Haritha Keralam National Environment Seminar witnessed 39 presentations organised across nine thematic sessions at two venues.

The first session, which began at 9.30 a.m., featured a detailed presentation by Adv. K. Anil Kumar on the rejuvenation of the Meenachil, Meenantharayar and Kodoorar rivers in Kottayam district. I.B. Satheesh, MLA, presented on “Jala Samruddhi Kattakkada, Thiruvananthapuram,” outlining water conservation initiatives in the constituency. P. Seithalavi, District Coordinator, Nava Kerala Karma Padhathi, Palakkad, shared experiences from environmental interventions carried out in the Thrithala constituency.

Discussions highlighted how the revival of water sources led to the restoration of agriculture, how recharge of wells and ponds helped raise groundwater levels, and how coordinated efforts among various departments and agencies ensured smoother project implementation. The session was chaired by A. Nizamudin, Director General of the Kerala Institute of Local Administration.

Subsequent sessions covered a wide range of themes, including climate change and disasters; reduction of carbon emissions in the transport sector — Kerala’s experience; challenges in the water sector, including floods and drought, and related strategies; greenhouse gas accounting and the net zero campaign; water quality issues, wastewater and biodegradable waste management — experiences and challenges; green energy for irrigation and water conservation — prospects and practices; policy issues and practical experiences in the use of solar and wind energy for large institutions; and environmental justice in the financial sector, sustainable agriculture financing, and the impact of global financial support on marginalised communities.The presentations reflected Kerala’s ongoing efforts to address contemporary environmental challenges through policy innovation, technological interventions and community participation.
